“My full name is Sahir Hanif, but everyone calls me “Sai,” [sounds like sigh.] I am the CEO/founder of Masters of Maple Drums, and Ghost Tech Touring. I have been in the music and touring business since I was a kid: my dad is an accomplished composer and multi instrumentalist [in the middle-eastern music sphere and movie world.] My mom is also a classically trained tanpura [similar to the sitar] player and singer.
I started off playing drums, guitar, and tablas, as time went on I decided to have drums be my main focus. I was lucky enough to have my dad teach me all of the instruments I wanted to play. He would also have me play some percussion on sessions and projects he was scoring. This eventually lead him to take me on the road to play drums and percussion. We played shows big and small and we went all over the US and Canada. From that point on I knew this was what I would be doing for the rest of my life.
The beginning of Masters of Maple was a natural progression. Everything stemmed from what I experienced as a drummer and drum tech. I grew the company out of my parent’s garage, and it has surpassed my wildest dreams. We have an incredible roster of artist and producers that use my drums, and they are made unlike any other. I am lucky enough to have gone all over the world to harvest timbers for the drums we make. I also have the privilege to work on records as a drum tech for many different artists and producers.
Later I started a touring company called Ghost Tech, basically it was a way to keep my friends working and save bands money. Ghost Tech is fairly young, and is continuing to grow as a multi-faceted company serving all aspects of touring and live event production. Both companies are separate but relate to each other. I am proud to be able to go out there and continue to work as a tour/production/stage manager and drum tech when I need to take a little vacation from the studio and drum building.
Artists and bands I’ve built drums and/or drum teched [live or studio] – Capital Cities, Cage the Elephant, The Wallflowers, Arctic Monkeys, Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato, Afghan Whigs, Eagles of Death Metal, Brody Dalle, Parkway Drive, AWOLnation, Walk The Moon, Jakob Dylan, Michelle Branch, Pepper, Jack Johnson.
Producers and Studios that I tech for/have my drums – Capitol Studios, Butch Walker, John Feldman, Hurley studios, Costa Mesa Sound Studios, The Pink Duck, Matt Hyde, Alain Johanes, Studio 606″
